Essa observa\u00e7\u00e3o foi feita em 1600, quando o f\u00edsico e fil\u00f3sofo brit\u00e2nico William Gilbert assinalou essa semelhan\u00e7a. O fen\u00f4meno magn\u00e9tico terrestre, no entanto, j\u00e1 era usado h\u00e1 muito tempo, com as famosas b\u00fassolas em navega\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>Esse grande im\u00e3 chamado Terra possui um campo magn\u00e9tico criado atrav\u00e9s do movimento constante de rota\u00e7\u00e3o. Inclusive, \u00e9 por esse motivo que os polos sul e norte ganharam esse nome: o planeta tamb\u00e9m possui um magnetismo proveniente do movimento do seu n\u00facleo.<\/p>\n<p>Logo, se soltarmos um im\u00e3 sobre a Terra, ele ir\u00e1 mostrar os lados norte ou sul, por esse motivo a b\u00fassola indica a dire\u00e7\u00e3o norte, sendo que sua agulha aponta para uma dire\u00e7\u00e3o de acordo com o magnetismo da Terra. Assim, como o princ\u00edpio do eletromagnetismo de cargas positivas e negativas, dentro do magnetismo se aproximarmos dois p\u00f3los nortes eles se repelem, mas se forem p\u00f3los contr\u00e1rios a tend\u00eancia \u00e9 a atra\u00e7\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>E sabe o que nos mant\u00e9m firmes na superf\u00edcie e tamb\u00e9m nos protege das part\u00edculas de eletromagnetismo que vem do espa\u00e7o? Ele mesmo: o magnetismo. O campo magn\u00e9tico da Terra protege o planeta dos chamados raios c\u00f3smicos, feixes de part\u00edculas de altas energias que v\u00eam do Sol. Ao se aproximar da Terra, as part\u00edculas carregadas eletricamente s\u00e3o desviadas, devido \u00e0 intera\u00e7\u00e3o magn\u00e9tica, em dire\u00e7\u00e3o aos polos. Essas part\u00edculas s\u00e3o desaceleradas ao entrar na atmosfera, emitindo radia\u00e7\u00e3o.
